DANIELS AND CATALYST INSTALL IP DISPATCH OVER SATELLITE SOLUTION

Victoria, B.C. Canada – November 3rd, 2011 - Daniels Electronics Ltd., a leading global supplier of high reliability Land Mobile Radio (LMR) base stations and repeaters, and Catalyst Communications Technologies, Inc., a leading provider of Internet Protocol (IP) based dispatch and interoperability solutions, have installed a full featured primary Dispatch solution for wide area critical communications. The customer, a government agency in Alaska, uses space-based satellites to link portions of the Radio over IP (RoIP) system. The integrated solution features a direct IP digital interface between the two companies’ products and supports P25 Unit ID and the P25 Emergency Indicator as well as the conventional signalling used in this installation.

The Daniels digital Universal Interface card (UIC) provides an Ethernet connection from the Daniels MT-4 P25 radio system to the Catalyst Dispatch system. Voice and control messages are routed across the agency’s existing IP network using a combination of hardwired and RF paths including satellite. Three MT-4 base stations are strategically located to provide radio communications across a 5.4 million acre territory – an area the size of New Hampshire. Three full featured Catalyst IP|ConsolesTM can access these base stations in any combination. In addition, a dozen Catalyst Desktop Dispatch clients have access to these same base stations and are located throughout the territory.

The agency began using Catalyst’s IP-based dispatch system in 2001 with Desktop DispatchTM clients accessing analog control stations as a back-up to their primary dispatch system. Over the years, dispatch personnel have transitioned from the older circuit-switched technology to RoIP. Today the Catalyst RoIP system is the primary dispatch tool for the agency and provides extensive flexibility for dispatch load sharing between dispatch centers for public safety and other activities. Catalyst President Robin Grier notes that, “Most significantly, the Catalyst system allows a single dispatcher to track a plane as it traverses hundreds of miles across the territory and in the process moves through the coverage of as many as thirteen different mountain top repeaters. The Catalyst system is a valuable safety tool, as it provides constant contact between a single dispatcher and the pilot throughout the entire flight.” Daniels President Robert Small adds that, “Daniels power-efficient design allows the MT-4 base stations to continue providing service from mountain tops that rely solely on solar panels and batteries. Replicating this functionality with traditional consoles and base stations would be cost prohibitive.”

The system was installed and is maintained by REVL Communications in Anchorage, AK. REVL president Seth Burris praises the solution and points out, “Dispatchers have full control of their radio communications from a single screen on the IP Console. Dispatchers can instantly transmit on any of the MT-4 base stations, independently control the volume of each base station, patch channels from different base stations, and replay the audio.” Each MT-4 supports thirty-two channels, and the agency is using multiple PL tones on each channel to control multiple cross-band repeaters. All calls are logged with a scrolling list presented in plain view of the dispatcher and stored electronically for later review.

Catalyst solutions support low bandwidth Internet Protocol connections such as those used by the satellite links that are necessary in low density population areas. In addition to the capabilities employed in this installation, agencies can use the Catalyst IP system to link Daniels base stations with a variety of radio systems such as Project 25, SMARTNET®, EDACSTM, NEXEDGE, and other systems as well as commercial Push-to-Talk solutions such as Verizon Wireless and iDen.

Daniels MT-4 Digital P25 Radio systems are known for their reliability, high performance and customizability. The customizability is due to the modular construction of the transmitters, receivers and associated modules, which are designed for a variety of frequency bands from 136 - 869 MHz. This modularity allows the custom configuration of radio systems to meet users’ specific applications such as base, repeater and cross band systems. The collaborative effort with Catalyst and its Voice over IP and IP Control technologies has further enhanced the flexibility of Daniels radios and added new functionality.
