Ground to Air Crossband Repeater
A ground-to-air crossband repeater allows FM ground radios (VHF or UHF) to communicate with AM VHF airband radios. This is ideal for providing ground-based firefighters or search and rescue crews with direct communication to supporting aircraft and helicopters. This technology is also used on oil rigs for Intrinsically Safe (IS) communication with incoming helicopters. Fixed locations such as a control tower or FM station can be provided with extended coverage to aircraft that are using AM radio equipment. A FM ground station or control tower would signal an aircraft through a FM link to a remote radio repeater. This signal would be crossbanded to an AM radio which would allow a greater coverage area. The aircraft would communicate through an AM signal to the repeater station which would be crossbanded to a FM radio that would communicate back to the control tower.
